The Medina, or the old city of Marrakech, was the first city of Marrakech, surrounded by a fortified wall with 20 main gates where guards protected Marrakech and screened those entering and exiting the Medina. The old city of Marrakech was built in 1071/1072 by the Almoravids, who established it as their capital, later followed by the Almohad state. Marrakech's Medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1972. The Medina of Marrakech boasts numerous historical monuments, such as the famous Jamaâ El Fna square, the Bahia Palace, many Saadian relics, and the Ben Youssef Madrasa... Today, Marrakech's Medina has become one of the world's most touristy cities. Desert Voyage Morocco organizes excursions, stays, and circuits in the Moroccan desert starting from Marrakech, as well as trips to the Atlas Mountains.
